Accident Prevention Systems for lorries

Dutch large-scale pilot aimed at reducing accidents, improving safety and positively affecting traffic circulation.

The ‘Accident Prevention Systems for lorries’ project is the most comprehensive FOT ever conducted with accident prevention systems. The FOT, involving 2.500 vehicles owned by more than 114 hauliers, tests five different accident prevention systems and a black box registration system.

The large-scale pilot has a clear PPP construction in which the Ministry of Transport, Connekt/ITS Netherlands, TNO, Buck Consultants International, several suppliers of in-car technology, a team of specialists equipping the vehicles, a large dealer network, knowledge institutes, hauliers and Dutch industry associations such as TLN, BOVAG, KNV, EVO, VERN and RAI Vereniging, in addition to the OEMs  Volvo, Scania, DAF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Renault and Iveco, are participating.

Accident Prevention Systems for lorries will benefit the logistical sector, as well as the economy and society as a whole. The FOT will clarify the added value that the tested systems will have for everyone’s safety, the driver as well as other road users.  The practical experiences with the various systems tested in the FOT can be instrumental in future policy-making in the Netherlands and the EU.
