The Dutch Ministry has interest in Intelligent Vehicle safety since it touches our core business: the Dutch national road network consists of 3250 km highways, of which 2.300 km of freeways. It is used extensively. 250 million vehicle kilometres. 470 million tons of freight yearly. The annual costs of traffic jams is app. € 800 million. There is an annual budget for construction of € 1.200.000.000 and for maintenance of € 600.000.000.

Hence safety, efficiency, reliability, travel times, sustainability are of the essence, not to mention the impact that Road pricing (foreseen in 2012) will have on ITS-use. We want to not only follow the international developments, but also contribute actively and have an evidence-based opinion. The Netherlands actively promote and distribute this knowledge through e.q. eSafety Forum WG’s, CEDR, EASYWAY, ERTICO.

Since early 90’s studies and simulations have been conducted to estimate the potential of eSafety. From ’06 onwards this has been explicitly in policy plans. We have since then conducted several FOTs:
• A demo in ’98 to create awareness
From ‘98-now several pilots, such as ISA, Rwise, Belonitor, Assisted Driver, Car as Sensor
CVIS, SAFESPOT, COOPERS
