Transport for London

TfL has surveyed every speed limit sign in London and produced a digital speed limit map. There is also a process in place to update the map every two months. The map is downloadable free from our web site.

We are also developing both an Advisory1 and Voluntary2 ISA system in partnership with ‘Technolution’, to prove the technology.

We currently have a prototype device with both Advisory and Voluntary functionality that has been fitted to 12 TfL fleet vehicles, two London Borough of Southwark vehicles, and two Leeds University ‘emissions testing’ vehicles. All vehicles will take part in the TfL ISA trials, with the Leeds vehicles being used to test the effect of ISA on vehicle emissions. We will seek drivers’ reactions and estimates of the effect on journey times.

The testing phase will finish towards the end of winter 2009, after which conclusions will be drawn and a report handed to the Mayor of London in the spring of 2010.

With this project TfL hopes to stimulate a market for ISA in London, and we intend to continually maintain and provide, free of charge, updated digital maps.
