4th eSafety Forum Plenary Meeting, 2 June 2005 After the very successful High-Level meeting in February this year, the eSafety Forum came back in full strength in its 4th Plenary Meeting, in Hannover during the 5th European ITS Congress (1 - 3 June). This meeting, with the focus on “Deploying eSafety” was the best attended ever and attracted over 120 participants. The meeting, moderated by Mr. F. de Bruïne, DG INFSO, consisted of three parts: High-Level opening remarks, presentation of the progress of the eSafety Working Groups towards deployment and a panel discussion on how to accelerate the deployment of eSafety.
Wolfgang Hahn, from the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing, stressed especially the importance of eCall, HMI and RTTI for Germany. A status report was thus given by the eScope eSafety Observatory and by chairmen from some of the key areas within the eSafety Forum. Members agreed that the focus should now shift away from technology and towards ensuring deployment, envolving the consumer. Communication needs to be stepped up in the first instance; tax incentives could also be used to improve consumer take-up of safety features, said Johan Grill, chairman of the eSafety Forum's User Outreach Working Group. Mr. Jean-Louis Marsaud, Secretary General of the Comité Européen des Assurances said that the insurance industry was ready to investigate the use of incentives for eSafety. Another major issue mentioned at the meeting was investment from member states.
