Human-Machine Interaction (HMI)

Human Machine Interaction with increasingly more complex in-vehicle systems is a major concern. To tackle this important issue, in 2000, the Commission published a Recommendation on Safe and Efficient In-vehicle Information and Communication Systems: a European Statement of Principles on human machine interface, which has been welcomed by the industry.

The Human Machine Interaction Working Group identified the HMI-related concerns relevant to the introduction of in-vehicle eSafety systems.

One of HMI’s major concerns was the introduction of nomadic devices in vehicles, whose use has highly increased since the EsoP’s release.

The Group finalised a detailed document on HMI, describing stakeholders' responsibilities and identifying the differences between principles on installation, information presentation, design of interaction and systems behaviour. An updated version of the EsoP was also published.
