India

Currently, no eSafety measures or programmes are undertaken anywhere in India so far as a full-blown application or implementation project. Some pilot projects, with a small percentage of commercial vehicles have been undertaken. The European eSafety initiative, EU-INDIA, will be presented to Indian authorities and industries and parallels will be drawn to Indian policy planning in the field of eSafety.

EU-India aims to improve road safety and the efficiency of transportation systems in India through the deployment of intelligent transport systems and services and in particular intelligent vehicle safety systems (eSafety). The project is co-funded by the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme and is coordinated by ERTICO ITS-Europe in close cooperation with AITS-ITS India. The two organisations are using their ITS networks in Europe and India to bring together stakeholders from public authorities, industry and the research sector. EU-India will run events to explore areas for cooperation with the main focus being on priorities for ITS implementation in India.

The overall objectives of the EU-INDIA project are to:

  • Enhance road safety and sustainable mobility in India through implementation of eSafety systems and services
  • Assist the Indian authorities in creating efficient traffic management solutions for major future events like the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010
  • Transfer European standards on new innovative ITS solutions to the Indian market
  • Support the European industry to respond to emerging business opportunities
  • Develop cooperation for targeted ITS development for the following priority fields: Public Transport Management, Integrated Traffic Management Systems, ETC, Location Based Services, Traffic Messaging Control and Pollution Monitoring
  • Make recommendations for new innovative ITS research activities to be launched in India
  • Support consortia of European and Indian ITS experts from the industry, research sector, and public authorities
  • Support the development of Public-Private Partnerships

The project started 1 December 2005 and will last for 18 months with the ultimate aim of initiating a longer-term cooperation between the European and Indian ITS communities.
