Latvia


The Ministry of Transport and Communications in Latvia is working to decrease the number of injuries and deaths on Latvian roads. They are also determined to improve the level of road safety to the level of developed European countries. In order to reach these goals, the Ministry in cooperation with other ministries are implementing the Road Traffic Safety National Program. The Road Traffic Safety Board coordinates the policies and administrates the implementation process and results of the program.

 

The measures taken to improve road safety in Latvia include the following actions:

• Control of traffic members: education and training of pedestrians and bicyclists, roadworthiness of vehicles, road traffic safety improvements in the dark

• Register driver’s penalty points for violating traffic regulations

• Eliminate cases of registering of illegally acquired vehicles

• Roadworthiness tests and remodelling control system complying with EU requirements

• Improved practical driving test for future drivers

• Analysing the road safety auditing system (2001) statistics, based on which take precautions in eliminating traffic accidents during planning, construction and use of traffic junctions

• Regularly organised traffic safety advertising campaigns
