Navigation and communication equipment in cars and developments like sensors and onboard computers are forging ahead inexorably. The possibilities and the consequences of providing in-car traffic management information (like route information and speed limit warnings) in combination with infotainment services (like email and news headlines) are being scrutinised. An in-car information system can enhance traffic safety by giving the driver timely information about relevant traffic jams and allowing him to adjust his speed or route choice accordingly. However, distraction or workload could adversely affect the interaction between the driver and the in-car system. RoadWise* sets out to show that customised information makes it easier for road users to make choices and thus journeys more effective and comfortable. The rapid development of ICT offers new opportunities to achieve this.
