GSM Association signs the eCall Memorandum of Understanding

Creation date: 10 September 2009

In the presence of Commissioner Reding, Martin Whitehead, Director of the GSM Association Europe, signed the eCall Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the mobile communications industry. The mobile phone operators are joining the car industry and the majority of Member States in their efforts to implement the in-vehicle emergency call system (eCall) across Europe.

When there is a serious accident, the in-vehicle emergency call system (eCall) can be generated either manually or automatically via activation of in-vehicle sensors. When activated the eCall establishes a 112 voice connection and sends its location to the nearest emergency response centre – Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), as defined by the relevant public authorities.

Full deployment of eCall requires close cooperation between public authorities, car companies and mobile phone operators.
